GROWING STRONG

Sport at Cowan House

Sport is a critical part of a primary school education and experience. From teamwork to discipline and sportsmanship, all these characteristics are important in developing a Cowan House child.

At Cowan House, both sport and culture play an integral part of our holistic approach to education. We provide age-appropriate skills whilst growing the ability of each child. We strive to compete at all levels and across all age groups and are guided by our Sports Vision Statement which is applicable to children, coaches and parents alike.

“To inspire and empower all children through engaging and inclusive sports experiences, promoting teamwork, resilience and a lifelong love for physical activity.”

Sport is an essential component in the development of any child and for this reason, involvement in team sports is compulsory at Cowan House. We believe in participation, skills development and, most of all, a growing enjoyment of sport coupled with a healthy sense of competition on the field and the court.

GRADE RRR - GRADE 0

Early Enjoyment
of Sports

At Cowan House, we encourage a love for physical activity from the earliest stages of development. Physical Education (P.E) is introduced in Grade RRR, focusing on the development of gross motor skills, coordination and the joy of movement. This early exposure lays an important foundation for a healthy, active lifestyle.

GRADE 1 AND GRADE 2

Our Mighty Minis

From Grade 1, our pupils participate in official sports sessions through our Mini Sport Programme. Marking the formal introduction of sport at Cowan House, this programme is intentionally designed for our Grade 1 and 2 boys and girls. It offers a fun and structured environment where children are introduced to the full range of sporting codes our school has to offer, serving as the basis of our broader sports programme.

Coached by a team of enthusiastic and dedicated coaches, our Mighty Minis develop fundamental skills, confidence and teamwork through engaging sessions. These formative years are essential for building the skills and values that shape a child’s long-term growth and future success.

The Mini Sport Programme is much more than an introduction to sport, it is an integral part of our holistic approach to education. It builds a strong foundation for physical development, teamwork and a lifelong love of sport, supporting each child’s journey from their earliest years through to high school.

GRADE 3 - GRADE 7

Developing Talent
& Team Spirit

From Grade 3 onwards, sport at Cowan House becomes more formalised, structured and competitive. Teams are formalised and pupils begin to experience the excitement and camaraderie of inter-school matches. These teams benefit from the expertise of a highly skilled coaching staff, many of whom are not only dedicated mentors but also serve as regional and provincial coaches, selectors and conveners for both boys’ and girls’ sports. This deep coaching experience provides our pupils with the opportunity to develop their skills in a supportive and challenging environment.

Our sports programme is further strengthened by on-campus private coaching in tennis, swimming and cricket, allowing pupils to refine their techniques and reach their full potential. With these resources, every child has the opportunity to explore their athletic interests, build confidence and develop the focus and commitment needed for competitive sport.
